Face recognition is tested on British high-speed trains

According to Eurostar, facial recognition is intended to be used to reduce queues and minimize the risk of virus transmission, reports Bleeping Computer.

There are two scans – one at the ticket control and one at the exit control where the passport is verified. However, entry control is not covered.

Passengers can choose whether they want to use the system that Eurostar calls “Smartcheck”.

Passengers who want to use the system need to visit an online portal where they provide information and a picture of their face that they take with their mobile phone or webcam. When they then pass the check, the image is used to verify that it is the same person.

It was last year that Eurostar announced that it wanted to replace physical controls with face recognition and the system they use has been built for them by the company Iproov.
