Diablo in series!?
Faced with the success of the Fallout series from Amazon Prime, Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard, has expressed his opinion that Blizzard's long-running action role-playing game series would make a great television adaptation. Despite the current craze for Amazon Prime's Fallout TV series, Fergusson pointed out that Diablo's universal themes could be just as captivating on screen. He stated :
Yes, I definitely think this could work. That's one of the things that I really liked about Diablo as an IP is that it has very relatable themes because it's about the High Heavens versus the Burning Hells, and that idea of Good versus Evil. I think that's something that could very well translate into something like this.
While Diablo isn't necessarily a story-driven game, the series has a rich lore that dates back to original classic from 1997 and continues in Diablo IVreleased in 2023.
Diablo isn't just loot!?
For those who don't know much about “Diablo lore”, here is a summary that might convince you of its series adaptation. Throughout the ages, Sanctuary, the world where the action takes place, has been the scene of an eternal struggle between good and evil. It all started with the Nephalems, powerful beings created by the ancient gods to protect the world against the Primordial Demons, evil entities from the void. The Nephalems, over time, divided into angels and demons, thus triggering the Sin War, an eternal struggle between the forces of heaven and hell.
Among these Primordial Demons are Diablo, Mephisto and Baal, the most powerful and formidable. Their thirst for power and domination drives them to seek to invade the world of men, sowing chaos and destruction in their wake. Corrupting human beings and manipulating the forces of nature, they constantly threaten the fragile balance of Sanctuary.
Throughout the ages, heroes (the players) rise to face the Primordial Demons and their servants. Armed with loot and powers of all kinds, these heroes travel through devastated lands, confronting hordes of demons and saving Sanctuary. In this perpetual struggle, the angels, led by the archangel of justice Tyraël, play a crucial role. The latter guides the heroes in their fight against evil.
This is what makes a good dark fantasy series, with a group of Dungeon and Dragon-style heroes. For now, nothing has been confirmedbut if the series could be as good as the latest small screen video game adaptations like Fallout or The Last of Us, the future of cross-media video games would be in good shape.
