Even Ryan Reynolds is surprised at how far the film can go

Deadpool & Wolverine will be the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to receive an R rating, meaning it cannot be seen in the USA by young people under 17 without a legal guardian. This is an atypical step for the Disney company, which is otherwise so focused on family-friendliness.

Ryan Reynolds describes the high level of violence in Deadpool 3 as huge step for Disney and he is therefore very proud on those responsible. But he also says: There was no other way to make the film anyway.

Surprised and grateful

In a new interview with the Youtube channel Fandango magazine's Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, among others, also comment on the making of the film.

Reynolds was particularly surprised by Disney's approval that Deadpool & Wolverine could be as violent as the first two Deadpool films:

I hope it doesn't sound arrogant, but I'm really proud of [Disney]that they do that. I think it's a big step for her. I mean, it adds to this kaleidoscope that this company is […] a completely different color.

Reynolds also lets it be known that the… Violence is not just a means to an end, but essential to the story of both Deadpool and Wolverine. It was only with the film Logan, released in 2017, that Hugh Jackman was able to fully showcase his complex character – not least because of the explicit content:

I was surprised that they were us [einen R-Rated-Film machen] but also very grateful. I mean, there is no other option.

For this character and this world, and especially because Logan is also an R-rated film, I felt like this was the most complete version of Wolverine or Logan that we've ever seen. This really gave us a lot of freedom, without just using the rating for brute force, but it really allowed us to do anything in a world where anything is possible.

Deadpool 3 a yardstick for future MCU films?

With the high age rating, Disney also accepts the risk of losing the underage audience who would otherwise buy the cinema ticket for the latest MCU film. It will therefore be interesting to see whether this risk is worth it from a financial point of view, i.e. whether the box office results are still right and Deadpool 3 will be a complete success.

This could also have a big impact on future MCU films. As is well known, a new Blade film is planned for 2025 and the vampire hunter is not known for lecturing his opponents, but rather for other valid Unpack arguments.

A project involving the Midnight Sons has also been circulating through the rumor mill for several years. This is a group consisting of Marvel characters who don't exactly correspond to the type of radiant hero, but rather come from the dark corner, as the name suggests. In addition to Blade, prominent members include Wolverine, Dr. Strange and the Ghost Rider.

Both Blade and projects like Midnight Sons would probably also benefit from a high age rating in order to be able to tell their stories in the best possible way. Deadpool 3 can rightly be viewed as a benchmark for future decisions by Disney.

By the way, Deadpool & Wolverine is currently a topic of conversation not only because of the violence. None other than Ryan Reynolds himself claims that the film does not have any of Marvel's traditional post-credit scenes. However, insiders contradict him. Who tells the truth? In the article above we tell you the whole story.
