Prime Video had a huge success with Fallout. But not everyone is enthusiastic about the video game adaptation of the action role-playing game. Criticism comes from the game’s own ranks.
The series based on the acclaimed video game series Fallout from Amazon Prime Video stayed in the top 10 charts for a long time in both the first and second seasons. But now it’s clear: not everyone involved in Fallout is happy with the adaptation.
There is criticism mainly from the video game designers of Fallout: New Vegas. They have a clear opinion about the Prime Video series – and it’s not necessarily positive.
Fallout: New Vegas lead designer finds dialogue “embarrassing”
The successful Prime Video series Fallout is hailed by many as one of the best video game adaptations of all time. The adaptation not only managed to stay true to the game’s origins, but also captured the atmosphere and spirit of the source material.
But not everyone sees it that way. Chris Avellone, lead designer of Fallout: New Vegas, spoke plainly about his opinion of the Fallout series in an interview with Access Granted:
Quote:
“I wish the writers of television series that imitate a game would try a little harder. For example, sometimes I wish the scripts of the Fallout series were a little better. I’m almost embarrassed to see some of the dialogue. But it’s still an entertaining series.”
Avellone also added that he felt Fallout’s plot could have been a little more fleshed out. There is also room for improvement regarding the dialogue, especially because the conversations between the characters could enhance a series or film. For him, that was definitely not the case with Fallout.
Dialogue problem is a general video game adaptation problem
Avellone also admitted that this problem of expandable dialogue doesn’t necessarily only apply to Fallout, but is a general problem with video game adaptations.
Quote:
“I don’t mean to put all Hollywood writers in this category, but I think some of them still have a hard time accepting that, ‘Okay, I’m writing a game series, and obviously the game writers didn’t know what they were doing. I’m a respected Hollywood writer and I know how something like that should work.'”
Avellone’s words make it clear that he would like to see closer collaboration between the screenplay writers and the video game writers.
However, the problem described by Avellone did not seem to affect the success of the Prime Video series. On the contrary: a third season of Fallout has already been confirmed. There is no official release date yet.
