Electric cars in Norway set to outnumber gasoline cars and dominate the roads

Gamingdeputy reported on April 23 that over the years, strong sales of electric vehicles in Norway have gradually changed the country’s road landscape. According to data from Statistics Norway and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the number of electric cars in Norway is expected to exceed the number of gasoline cars for the first time by the end of this year at the earliest.

The number of fuel vehicles in Norway is decreasing year by year, while the number of electric vehicles continues to grow. Currently, there are nearly 700,000 electric vehicles registered in Norway, and this number is expected to reach 800,000 by 2024/2025. At the same time, the number of gasoline vehicles is about 775,000 and is still declining. The number of electric vehicles will soon exceed the number of gasoline vehicles.

However, it may still take several years for electric cars in Norway to surpass the current number of diesel cars, which exceed 1 million.

As of March 2024, the car ownership in Norway is divided by fuel type as follows:

  • Diesel: 1,068,929 units

  • Gasoline: 776,003 units

  • Pure electric: 700,358 vehicles (accounting for 24.3%)

  • Hybrid: 339,724 vehicles (of which nearly 200,000 are plug-in hybrid vehicles)

  • Total: 2,885,014 vehicles

The high proportion of electric vehicles in Norway is due to its long-term vigorous promotion policy. For more than a decade, Norway has maintained high sales of electric vehicles. This year, the country's pure electric vehicle sales have stabilized at around 90% (if plug-in hybrid vehicles are included, the proportion exceeds 92%) .

However, Gamingdeputy has noticed that Norway’s car registrations (total and pure electric) are declining recently. In March this year, the number of new registrations of passenger cars, especially plug-in cars, almost halved.

Registrations of plug-in passenger cars in Norway fell significantly compared to the same period last year:

  • Pure electric vehicles: 8,709 units (down 48%), market share 89.3%

  • Plug-in hybrid vehicles: 210 units (down 75%), market share 2.2%

  • Total: 8,919 units (down 49%), market share 91.5%

In the first quarter of this year, more than 20,500 new plug-in buses were registered in Norway, accounting for about 92% of total sales.

Plug-in car registrations also fell by about 20% in the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year:

  • Pure electric vehicles: 20,073 units (down 17%), market share 90.2%

  • Plug-in hybrids: 451 units (down 71%), 2% market share

  • Total: 20,524 units (down 20%), market share 92.2%

For comparison, a total of 114,759 plug-in cars were registered in Norway in 2023 (accounting for 90% of total sales), a 25% decrease compared to 2022.

Judging from recent registration data, pure electric vehicles dominate the Norwegian passenger car market, with other types of vehicles having lower market shares. Sales in this segment are expected to decline further in 2024 due to reduced subsidy policies for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

In terms of best-selling models, Tesla Model Y continued to rank first, with a total of 4,704 units sold in the first quarter of this year, accounting for 20.4% of total sales, followed by Toyota bZ4X (1,324 units) and Volkswagen ID.4. (924 vehicles).
