Was the role-playing game “Dragon Age: Inquisition” really a commercial flop? BioWare's official figures speak volumes in this regard.
It is now almost exactly ten years since developer BioWare released the role-playing game “Dragon Age: Inquisition” for PC and consoles. It was the successor to the very successful “Dragon Age 2” and should ideally follow in its (commercial) footsteps.
However, in the period after the release there were repeated reports that the third game was supposedly a financial flop. Is that even true?
Dragon Age 3 a flop? This is what BioWare says about the topic
Mark Darrah was for a long time the executive producer for the role-playing game series “Dragon Age” at BioWare. In 2020, he had actually decided to to leave the development studioHowever, he recently returned to advise the team on the new RPG project “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” to support.
Now he has spoken out via X (formerly Twitter) to finally clear up the flop rumors surrounding “Dragon Age: Inquisition”. Among other things, he mentioned a very interesting number that many fans probably didn't know before.
“Well, I don’t know exactly where this Dragon Age: Inquisition was a commercial failure ever came… It's currently at over 12 million. It has CLEARLY exceeded Electronic Arts' internal forecasts. Oh yeah, it was also Game of the Year 2014.”
According to the report, “Dragon Age: Inquisition” has now sold over twelve million copies since its launch. That definitely doesn't sound like a major flop or a commercial failure. With Darrah's statements, this topic should finally be closed.
What's next for Dragon Age?
By the way, the next big sales success for BioWare's iconic role-playing franchise could soon be on the way. If everything goes according to plan, another offshoot of the RPG series, “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” will be released for PC and consoles on October 31, 2024.
