Developers have a “real hunger” for AI use

There is “a real hunger” among developers at EA when it comes to the use of artificial intelligence. At least that's what managing director Andrew Wilson thinks and explains how AI can improve the development process.

Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, spoke again about artificial intelligence in the recent Q&A session. He explained how the use of AI should be incorporated into development.

The company has been “closely connected to AI” since the beginning of Electronic Arts. Nevertheless, the team is “still at the very beginning” when it comes to generative AI.

It is at the heart of every game we create, recreating human intelligence in the context of a gaming experience.

Significantly more efficient thanks to artificial intelligence

Wilson cites the “EA Sports FC” series as an example of sensible use. It used to take the team six months to build a stadium, but today it takes six weeks. According to the CEO, this period is likely to continue to shorten.

Furthermore, AI helps to create animation cycles: “When we develop a game, we have animation and execution cycles that are perhaps even more profound. In FIFA 23 we had 36 running cycles, which allowed for a kind of believability of human performance in this game. When we launched EA Sports FC 24, we had 1,200 run cycles.”

These animation cycles work to create a more immersive experience that is more in line with a real football match. Such tools should give development teams more power and save a lot of time.

In the future, more than half of development processes could be improved by generative AI. The plan is: to transform the entire process within the next few years.

Much larger game worlds than before

The next question is how larger game worlds with more characters can be created. In three to five years it should be possible to create larger worlds than before. Beyond these five years, all the tools created will be made available to the entire community. EA hopes that this will provide a wide variety of innovative gaming experiences.

It's not about replacing previous work, but rather improving, supplementing and expanding interactive entertainment. “Just like YouTube did for traditional film and television,” says Wilson.

The businessman already spoke about the advantages of AI a few weeks ago:

According to the managing director, there is “a real hunger among developers” to achieve these projects as quickly as possible. The “holy grail” for Electronic Arts is to “develop bigger, more innovative, more creative and more entertaining games faster.” This means that more people around the world can be entertained more quickly.
