We have broken down the exact procedure in the following article.

Report from March 19, 2024: The good news first: also She can become player of the year at the official German computer game award! Yes, really. There's no check for this, but at least five minutes of fame in front of the assembled games industry – and a steel trophy with a switchable blue light (special feature: it glows blue).

With the title 'Player of the Year' – as it is officially called – should “E-athletes, Letsplayers or (simple) gamers” who are awarded with “special services” have drawn attention to themselves. In addition to playful achievements, commitment to the medium of games, to the community or society also comes into question – always provided that there is a connection to video games.

The nominees this year are:

  • Rebecca Raschun (JustBecci)
  • Fabian Siegismund
  • Franziska Bülow (Pure4U agency)
  • Sandra Friedrichs (Abnormal disaster)
  • Maurice Weber

There are good ones in all cases, in everyone understandable reasons – for example, the influencers also position themselves publicly apart from their Letsplays and Twitch chats or address and discuss topics such as mental health.

Since yesterday and until April 11th voting is underway, before the Computer Game Prize (DCP for short) is awarded in Munich on April 18th. We are looking for the successor to Pia Scholz, better known as Shuryoka. In 2023, the opinionated influencer took on, among others, Seniors Zocken, YouTuber Steinwallen and RB-Leizpig-Fifa-Player Umut Gültekin prevailed.

This decision did not come as a surprisebecause – unlike most DCP categories – it is one Audience Award acts. This means: Prominent candidates with a particularly wide reach and many millions of followers on YouTube, Twitch, X, TikTok & Co. are inevitably at an advantage because they can activate their community. In previous years, Maximilian Knabe (HandOfBlood), Jasmin Sibel (gnu) and Counter-Strike professional Fatih Dayik (Gob b).

In order to alleviate this VIP factor at least a little, the selection process is divided into two parts: First, the organizers collect well-founded suggestions, which an expert jury then considers and makes a pre-selection. Five nominees will then stand for election. Analogous to the Eurovision Song Contest, the votes of the main jury (members) and the audience are included in the rating. Depending on their placement, candidates receive 9, 6, 4, 2 or 0 points. These points are then added together; A maximum of 18 points is possible. In the event of a tie, the jury has the final say – alternatively, the prize can be awarded equally to two winners.

Although the category is undefended, it is loaded with reputation. The German Computer Game Prize is the counterpart to the German Film Prize: the Federal Republic of Germany has been honoring the developers of exceptional games made in Germany with this title since 2009. The prize money totaling €800,000 is contributed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), whose games department is responsible for the games industry.

For historical reasons, the award ceremony takes place alternately between Berlin and Munich. This year it is the Bavarian capital's turn. Uke Bosse and Katrin Bauerfeind will host the evening – the show will be broadcast live online on April 18th. Also there: the candidates for the title of 'Player of the Year'.
