Could there still be a season 5 of Sherlock on Netflix?

Series Sherlock just arrived on Netflix. While it is currently ending with a season 4, no one is really closing the door on a season 5.

When it aired in 2010, the first season of Sherlock completely renewed the approach of the famous detective by modernizing it, in contemporary London. The very cerebral series, produced by the BBC, also benefited from a dream cast with Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman (Watson), accompanied by Lara Pulver, Mark Gatiss, Louise Brealey, Andrew Scott and Amanda Abbington.

The cult series has returned in the Netflix catalog, after a few years of absence, on April 1, 2024. We therefore find the 4 seasons of this series signed Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss — based on the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There is no sequel on the program… but is the series canceled?

Season 5 of Sherlock is not completely abandoned

Season 4 of Sherlock was broadcast in 2017. More than seven years later, is there hope of seeing a season 5? The fact is that the series was never really “cancelled”, but the delicate availability of the actors, very popular and in demand, had become a notorious obstacle. In interview, Martin Freeman, the actor of Watson, believed that the series was mainly on “break”. He said he was ready to come back for a good sequel.

Steven Moffat, the co-creator, was also very clear that in his eyes, the series is not really finished. “ Martin and Benedict, please come back », he joked in 2023. He then explained that, if Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch made themselves available, he could start writing season 5 “ tomorrow “. The same goes for the rest of the team: “ Mark (Gatiss) would do it tomorrow, Sue (Vertue, the producer) would do it tomorrow — we would all do it again. It depends on Benedict and Martin. »

The story of Sherlock is therefore not necessarily finished. But to imagine a season 5, the BBC will have to put in place the means to convince the two main actors to return, and for their agendas to agree. An open door is already that.
