Control your mobile phone media output with Google Android 15’s latest feature: watch switching

Gamingdeputy reported on April 30 that developer Mishaal Rahman recently published a blog post stating that Google plans toAndroid 15 New features are introduced into the system,The media output of the phone can be controlled through the paired Pixel Watch smart watch.

After users pair a Wear OS watch with an Android phone, they can control the phone's media playback on the watch, but the lack of a function to switch media input means that if the user changes the audio output device of the phone, the user needs to pick up the phone to operate.

when you will Android When pairing a phone with a smartwatch running Wear OS, you usually need to set up a companion app on the phone. This companion app usually not only allows you to change various options on your watch from the comfort of your phone's big screen, but also synchronizes important data from your phone, such as notifications, calls, text messages, and more. However, before collecting and sending this data, the companion app needs to request a number of sensitive permissions on your phone.

However, before collecting and sending this data, the companion app needs to request a number of sensitive permissions on your phone.

Companion apps can leverage Android's companion device profile feature to request access to these necessary permissions all at once, rather than requiring the user to grant each permission individually.

For example, a companion device profile for a smartwatch android.app.role.COMPANION_DEVICE_WATCH Grant companion apps permissions related to calendar access, phone call access, text message access, contact access, nearby device scanning, and more.

In the Android 15 system, if the companion application wants to control the watch, it needs to apply for a new platform permission called MEDIA_ROUTING_CONTROL.

The MEDIA_ROUTING_CONTROL permission allows a companion app to “access a list of available devices and control which device transmits or casts audio or video from other apps.”

Specifically, this permission gives the application (and your smartwatch) the right to change the location of the phone’s audio output. Gamingdeputy attaches two examples as follows:

  • For example, you watch a video on your mobile phone and play the audio through external playback. If you want to switch to headphones, you don't need to interrupt the video in Android 15, you can do it on the watch.

  • For example, if you are listening to music on your phone in the kitchen, but want to seamlessly transfer it to a smart speaker in the living room, you only need to tap a few times on the watch to complete the switch.
