Connected Home Standard Matter Now Includes Microwaves and Cars

Launched in November 2022, the Matter protocol aims to unify the connected home around a single standard, compatible with all platforms and all voice assistants. There is still a long way to go, but new devices are now compatible thanks to the arrival of the Matter 1.3 update.

Six months after Matter 1.2, which provided support for robot vacuum cleaners and dishwashers, the CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance) announces Matter 1.3, the new major update of the home automation standard.

What new devices are compatible with Matter 1.3?

With Matter 1.2, the CSA added several popular categories to its standard. Among them: refrigerators, air conditioners, dishwashers, washing machines, robot vacuum cleaners or smoke detectors… Video surveillance and intercoms are still missing, even though they are a of the most popular categories in 2024.

The new Matter 1.3 standard, announced on May 8, adds some new devices… and especially new capabilities related to energy management. The new features are as follows:

  • THE microwave and the hotplates are now Matter compatible, with the possibility of managing cooking time from your smartphone, varying the power or receiving notifications at the end of cooking.
  • THE extractor hoods can be managed by Matter, with the possibility of turning on the light or changing the suction.
  • THE tumble dryersalready compatible with the previous Matter, can now communicate information on the drying temperature, change modes and send notifications.
  • Devices for detect water leaks become Matter compatible.
  • THE electric car chargers integrate the Matter protocol, so that the cost of a charge and the power can be controlled from any application.
  • All devices can now share information about their energy consumptionso that users discover which devices consume too much and optimize their consumption.

Since Matter is universal, update 1.3 should be deployed to all brands (even if, as of May 2024, many apps still do not support devices in the Matter 1.2 category). In any case, in the relatively near future, it will be possible to program the charging of your electric car with Siri or Google Gemini. Next step: cameras.
