On day 1 after the German Computer Game Award 2024, the joy among award winners, companies and sponsors continues to be great.

The 16th edition of the German Computer Game Prize (DCP) also produced nominees and winners who were delighted with praise, fame, trophies and €800,000 in prize money. The reactions across the country are correspondingly euphoric.

Martin Thiele-Schwez, Managing Director of Playing History (Winner in the category 'Best Serious Game' with Friedrich Ebert – The path to democracy): “Games can be more than just entertainment. They are able to make a contribution to socio-political discourses. Especially at a time when democracy is threatened by right-wing and authoritarian forces, it is important to understand more about the development of democracy and the Weimar Republic.”

Michael Kellner (Greens), Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs (BMWK): “This year’s DCP particularly shows the wide range and creativity of the games developed in Germany. This enormous diversity and creativity must be further expanded in the future and the industry's potential made greater use. As the federal government, we want to make a significant contribution to this with the new games funding. The games funding is intended to help us develop titles like this year’s best international game in the future.”

Bavaria's Digital Minister Fabian Mehring (Free Voters): “With Pixel Maniacs as 'Studio of the Year', the German Computer Games Award is a real home win for our Bavarian games industry. Benjamin Lochmann and his team from Nuremberg are Bavaria’s creative champions – congratulations! The fact that two Bavarian studios were nominated in this important category shows that the turbo that I ignited for Bavaria's games industry after taking office has paid off. Our successes show that we have created the best conditions in the Free State to put our studios on the fast track.”

Hendrik Lesser, Managing Director of the Games Bavaria Munich (GBM) location initiative: “In current times it is very difficult to develop video games, especially as an independent studio. In addition to the well-deserved recognition for their excellent work, the winners also receive a financial boost and increase their visibility in the gaming community. This should provide impetus for future projects as well as motivation for other German studios. Of course, I am particularly happy for our Bavarian prize winners from the Pixel Maniacs studio. The Studio of the Year award shows once again that Bavaria's support of more than fifteen years is paying off. We are particularly pleased about the increased support from politicians in the current legislative period.”

Felix Falk, managing director of the game industry association: “Even in these very challenging times for many games companies in Germany, high-quality and successful games have been created that have now been deservedly honored on the big stage of the DCP. Around half of these great games were created with the support of the Games Fund. This shows once again what potential we can leverage in Germany if the political framework for game development is really plannable and internationally comparable. Then games from Germany will be able to broadcast even more strongly all over the world and celebrate successes on the national and international stage. That must be our goal!”

Clara Deitmar, Julius Dorsel and Luzie Kehlewinner in the 'Best Graphic Design' category The Bear: A Story from the World of Gra: “It was really great to be able to take part in the DCP this year. The nominations alone meant so much to us – winning is phenomenal. We couldn’t have asked for a better start for our newly founded studio.”

The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region records five DCP trophies, including three for Hekate (Ad infinitum) and an award each for Playing History (Friedrich Ebert: The path to democracy) and Play From Your Heart (LOOSE CTRL). Medienboard managing director Helge Jürgens: “The promotion of the local games industry is rewarded: We are happy about happy players and winners and about the great response for the number 1 games location in Berlin-Brandenburg! Thanks to the industry for the great commitment and the strong content!”

The initiative Gaming without limits advocates for the participation of gamers with disabilities and wins the special jury prize. The project is supported by the mobile phone provider Congstar. Daniel Heinz, Head of Digital Games Department at the Department for Youth Media Culture NRW: “We are really proud of this award and see it as confirmation of our work. Together with Congstar we have already achieved a lot, but there is still a lot of work ahead of us to help further strengthen inclusion-promoting approaches in gaming.”

Timo Wakulat, Senior PR Manager at Congstar: “When we see the passion with which the employees of Gaming Without Borders carry out their important task, it is more than deserved. As a company, we would like to bring some additional attention to inclusion in gaming and look forward to the next few years together and campaigns with gaming without borders.”
