There have been strange situations recently when releasing Xbox games on Sony's hardware. “Hi-Fi Rush” and “Pentiment” made their debut on the PS5 the better figure. And in the case of “Sea of Thieves” the new platform also seems to offer advantages, even if the differences are hardly significant in practice.

What does Digital Foundry say about the PS5 port?

The technical experts at Digital Foundry dedicated a comparison test to the PS5 version of “Sea of Thieves” and highlighted the differences to its Xbox Series X counterpart.

In terms of graphics quality, both platforms offer a 4K image. Although dynamic resolution is possible, neither console dropped below 2,160p in testing. As usual, the Xbox Series S plays in a lower league. Here it is 1,080p.

A comparison with the PC and its graphics settings was also on the agenda. The PS5 version of the pirate adventure is more like the “highest shadow quality option”, even if none of the consoles would fit perfectly.

“The PS5 and PC show similar-looking shadow detail, with slightly more filtering on the PC,” the publication said. Overall, the shadow reproduction on the PS5 is better than on the Xbox Series X, with sharper outlines and more visible details, although this would hardly be significant outside of direct comparisons.

The PS5 is also ahead when it comes to displaying foliage

Another point of comparison between “Sea of Thieves” on the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles was the depiction of foliage. Here the Sony console has a constant lead in terms of drawing distance.

In the PS5 version of “Sea of Thieves”, more distant leaf elements regularly appeared that were on the Xbox Series X were not visible at all.

“Here, too, there are very small differences that can only be seen in a direct comparison. But for some reason there is a clear advantage for the PlayStation that I don't really understand at the moment,” writes Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie.

Ultimately, the PS5 version of “Sea of Thieves” would correspond to the maximum PC settings, while the “Xbox falls a little behind”.

The Xbox Series S cannot keep up in comparison. The texture quality on the stripped down console suffers from the lower resolution throughout the entire environment. However, at a “reasonable distance” the results would look quite similar. Further results from the comparison Digital Foundry provides a comprehensive analysis.
