CoD: Black Ops 6 – The campaign hits an unexpected hit in the test!

Although they are repeatedly declared unnecessary and far too short, Call of Duty's single-player campaigns are still an important part of the overall package for many fans.

Blasting your way through the story once or twice is an integral part of your annual ritual, just like telling all your friends after a few months that you are guaranteed (!) never to buy a Call of Duty again.

That the overall package is… Modern Warfare 3 felt like a hastily developed full-price DLC, we got that first in his campaign felt.

A four-hour long nonsense story, if it comes up, which was then stretched out with a lot of open-world filler – it was clear that Treyarch had to do a lot this year to smooth things over again.

And lo and behold: it worked. Black Ops 6 not only delivers one of the longest campaigns in the world Series story but also one of the best!

There's evil in the bush!

Black Ops 6 is set in 1991 and is, unsurprisingly, firmly anchored in the Black Ops canon. The events from Cold War and the past missions of Black Ops 2 are mentioned frequently, but the story can easily stand on its own two feet.

Anyone who knows the predecessors will have more insight here and there; fortunately, the bits and pieces from Cold War's multiplayer seasons don't play a role.

The Soviet Union and the network surrounding the atomic bomb thief Perseus are history, but of course it won't be long before the next shadow organization appears on the scene and is working on weapons of mass destruction.

This time the threat is called Pantheon and, as we quickly discover, has a direct line to our employer, the CIA.

However, the command doesn't like investigations at all and we are soon forced to operate on our own. In the role of the mute CIA agent Case and with old and new characters at the side, we set off to put a stop to Pantheon and find out who is actually pulling the strings.

War and cheese

Here, scraps of real history, conspiracies and crazy psychological trips come together. As is typical for Black Ops, we are hit with a few twists that no longer catch us off guard, but still steer the story in entertaining directions right up to the end.

It also helps that the Black Ops crew is allowed to show more personality than their Modern Warfare counterparts, and that character models and cutscenes are technically at a very high level.

The German soundtrack often lacks the necessary enthusiasm – play in English if you can, then the characters will get a lot more color. Don't expect a serious war shooter or a sober espionage thriller. Black Ops 6 basically captures the flair, but above all it wants to be a popcorn cinema and the fun nonsense doesn't stop with the remote-controlled throwing knife.
