Ubisoft announces Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles, an “experimental tactical RPG” on PC, pitting teams of Mythical Champions in PvP confrontations. The game is also based on the Oasys blockchain.
Will blockchain-based games eventually catch on with gamers?Time will tell, but while many gamers are still often very resistant to blockchain-based games, a number of studios are clearly interested in decentralized technologies – and no doubt also in their financial potential. This is clearly the case withUbisoftwho announce Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles.
The developer is still very stingy with details, but on a rather skinny official site, Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles is presented as an “experimental tactical RPG” to be distributed on PC and giving pride of place to PvP: players will be called upon to “compose a team of mythical Champions, to engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players and to discover the legends of the dark world of Grimoria”.
A blockchain-based game
A short FAQ published on the official website specifies above all that the game is intended to be based on the Oasys blockchain, launched in February of last year with the ambition of offering a technology designed specifically for the game – and several development studios, particularly in Japan, have already announced partnerships with Oasys, such as bandai namco, Sega Or Square-Enix (which recently announced Symbiogenesis integrating NFTs).They are therefore now joined by Ubisoft, but the Breton developer does not specify how the decentralized technology of the blockchain will integrate into the gameplay of Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles – we imagine that the players could be destined to collect objects or characters ( like the mythical Champions of the description of the game, integrated into the grimoire of chronicles of the title?), in order to enhance them inside and outside the game universe.
While waiting to learn more about Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles, its gameplay and its ambitions, we remember that this is not the first time that Ubisoft has taken an interest in the blockchain. At the end of 2021, the studio had launched Quartz, its NFT exchange platform (particularly around Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which has since gone into maintenance mode), without however managing to attract players there – and by arousing internal criticism from the unions present within the studio. We will no doubt be curious to discover if, with a few years of hindsight, Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles will receive a warmer welcome.
At this stage, Ubisoft does not detail the gameplay of Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles, nor does it specify the launch date of the game, but the curious are invited to register on the official website to follow the progress of the project.
