Can Lara Croft “for free” save this poorly rated action flop?

What a disappointment. With Borderlands, a very special video game film adaptation was released in cinemas this year. The action film could have been a huge success on paper. A great shooter series as a template. Excellently cast with The Lord of the Rings star Cate Blanchett, Dwayne Johnson's buddy Kevin Hart, Halloween icon Jamie Lee Curtis and “Bowser” Jack Black. And a furious trailer. But that didn't help.

What is the biggest action flop of the year?

Borderlands barely performed at the global box office a shockingly weak $33 million a. And that with estimated production costs $110 to $120 million. The action film was also downgraded on Rotten Tomatoes.

Only 10 percent of the critics rated Borderlands positively. The audience was there 51 percent positive reactions at least a little more favorable in the reviews. This means that Borderlands is competing with this film, among others, for the title of biggest cinema flop of the year. In order to somehow make Borderlands a success, unusual methods are used. Of all things Lara Croft should save the film.

Borderlands wouldn't be the first massive cinema flop that still becomes a hit when streamed. Although a success on Netflix, Amazon or Disney Plus cannot really compensate for a failure at the box office, strong viewer numbers would at least cushion a loss of millions a little. None other than Lara Croft is now supposed to inspire the audience for Borderlands.

Angelina Jolie took on the legendary role of the video game heroine in 2001 and 2003. Although Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life are not necessarily considered masterpieces, Angelina Jolie is a cult Hollywood icon. Apparently they want to take advantage of this popularity to make the action flop Borderlands a little more successful.
