We cannot say that Brad Pitt and Adam Sandler had the same career. One became one of Hollywood's biggest starswhile the other has been named many times at the Razzie Awards, a ceremonial parody dedicated to the worst of cinema. That being said, Adam Sandler has participated in numerous comedies, often well received by a fairly young audience. As a result, it is rather popular, and when even been nominated for the Golden Globes in 2003 in the category “best actor in a musical or comedy film” For Punch-Drunk Love. He is particularly known for Wedding Singer, Big Daddy or Funny Peopleand many of his films are in the catalog of American airlines.

But there is one film that impressed Brad Pitt. Gathered as part of the Actors to Actors format from Variety, Brad Pitt and Adam Sandler spoke at length about their careers, the films they like, the evolution of cinema and ways of filming. A very interesting long discussion for cinema enthusiasts, and from which a particular film emerges: Uncut Gems. Directed by Joshua and Ben Safdie, two independent directors who truly embody another vision of cinema. After The Pleasure of Being Robbed, Lenny and the Kids, Mad Love in New York and Good Timethe duo directed the music video for Marcy Me (Jay Z). In doing so, they were spotted and were able to unlock an interesting budget for their new project, Uncut Gems.

Brad Pitt impressed by Uncun Gems, the Netflix exclusive with Adam Sandler

This film tells the story of Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a New York jeweler who receives an Ethiopian opal, endowed with value. This is good, because Howard owes his brother-in-law Arno $100,000, which has henchmen. While he has to present the stone for auction, Howard sees the basketball player Kevin Garnett (who plays his own role), enter the store.

The latter wants the stone, because “it brings luck”, and Howard agrees to lend it to him in exchange for a ring put as security. Howard pawns it, and successfully gambles the amount on the basketball player's game. Except that the stone is not returned, and that the trouble begins. Then begins a gripping thriller, made up of exchanged objects, doubts, risky bids and constant threats. Presented as electric or even epileptic, the film is very well received by critics. He also caught the eye of Brad Pitt, who declared during the exchange:

I'm a little obsessed with comedy at the moment (…). But this movie… First of all, hats off, man. It was phenomenal. I was so anxious watching it, even though it looked amazing to do. Except the panic scenes. (…) It was very kinetic, but watching it, I was so anxious. (…).

Adam Sandler thanks him and explains that it's probably the freest film he has made, even if he was afraid that such a role would be poorly received, he who is rather known for comic roles. It must be said that initially, the main role was to go to Jonah Hill, which declined due to his schedule. Presented for the first time during the Telluride festival in 2019. It was then released in a limited number of theaters in the United States, before being purchased by Netflix. Since 2020, the film is available on the SVOD platform, which has an exclusivity. If the name Ben Safdie rings a bell, that's normal. Because in addition to being a recognized director, he embodies Nari in Obi-Wan Kenobi And Edward Teller in Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan.
