Before GTA 6 release: predecessor reaches gigantic milestone

After the “GTA 6” release was narrowed down in more detail, a new number followed the predecessor. A gigantic sales mark has been broken. And many more millions of sales are expected to be added by the launch of the next part.

Why does he let “GTA 6” release waiting so long? There is a simple reason for this: the predecessor “GTA 5” is incredibly successful and remains regularly in the charts even more than ten years after its launch.

There is also the multiplayer part “GTA Online”, which brings additional money into the coffers Take Two rinses. So why should a money printing machine be replaced?

The latest sales figure shows how great the success actually is. “GTA 5” has overcome a milestone that only another game has previously been able to achieve – albeit under different conditions.

Take-Two announces new sales figures

According to the publisher, Rockstar's mega-blockbuster “GTA 5” has sold more than 200 million copies since the open-world title was launched for PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013.

Since then, two more console generations have appeared on which “GTA 5” can be played in an adapted version. What remains particularly impressive is that after more than ten years, the title still has higher quarterly figures than most new games.

According to previous business reports, “GTA 5” had sold 180 million copies by March 2023, up from 175 million copies three months earlier. Take-Two spoke in the penultimate annual report, published in February 2024 of 195 million copies. This means that around five million games are sold every quarter.

There is only one game ahead of “GTA 5” in the bestseller list. It is “Minecraft”, which was released in 2011 and exists in countless versions, including inexpensive copies for mobile systems. There are more than 300 million sales here.

Overall, the “Grand Theft Auto” series has sold almost half a billion units in its history, with “GTA 5” accounting for almost half of that.

When will GTA 6 be released?

The gigantic sales figure of “GTA 5” and the monthly growth are in themselves a huge success that other publishers can only dream of. However, the “GTA” series operates in completely different dimensions and the launch of “GTA 6” will cause sales figures to explode.

Analysts also expect an impulse for the entire industry after it has essentially sunk into a slumber in recent months. Also the one supposedly coming onto the market in autumn 2024 PS5 Pro could benefit from “GTA 6” as it appears to be the first choice for the Rockstar blockbuster.

After it was previously only known that the “GTA 6” release would take place in 2025, Take-Two became more precise in its last annual report. So players can prepare for a release in autumn 2025.

“Our outlook reflects a reduction in the Calendar 2025 to Fall 2025 window previously established by Rockstar Games for Grand Theft Auto 6,” it said.

The title should therefore come onto the market sometime in September, October, November or December 2025. If Take-Two is based on its predecessor, it would be the first month mentioned.
