Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration returns in a physical expanded edition on Nintendo Switch

Saint-Ouen, France – June 25, 2024 – Atari, developer Digital Eclipse and Maximum Entertainment France are pleased to announce a new edition for Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, enriched with new content, games, interviews and prototypes. This Expanded Edition will be available in physical edition on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 on October 25, 2024.

This new edition is an expanded version of the interactive museum experience and games compilation released in 2022 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Atari brand and its heritage. This expanded edition adds two new timelines and 39 games to Atari's playable retrospective: there are now more than 140 playable classic games, including recently rescued and unreleased prototypes, and other rare gems, 13 new game segments Exclusive interviews with key players in the gaming industry, and new segments on the history of iconic brands like Mattel's Intellivision and Stern Electronics!


To celebrate this expansion of the “Atari digital museum”, a Deluxe Edition with Steelbook will also be available on Nintendo Switch on the same date.

Atari and developer Digital Eclipse are proud to present a significant expansion of their acclaimed 2022 release, Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. This new version, entitled “ Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration – Expanded Edition » includes the original release and adds two new timelines as well as 39 games to Atari's playable retrospective.


The “The Wider World of Atari” timeline, which includes 19 playable games and eight video segments, dives deep into the stories of Atari's history, showing how Atari has continued to influence creators and fans throughout decades. New interviews, vintage advertisements, historical artifacts, and more have been researched and presented with Digital Eclipse's signature style. Highlights of the new timeline include an in-depth exploration of Stern Electronics' robot-blasting Berzerk; unusual and underappreciated innovations and hidden gems from the late 1980s; a spotlight on artist Evelyn Seto, who helped create Atari's iconic “Fuji” logo; Al Alcorn, the creator of Pong, explaining how Breakout came to be; and an exploration of the role of fans in discovering unpublished prototypes, creating homebrew games, and preserving Atari history.

The “The First Console War” timeline, which includes 20 playable games and half a dozen video segments, tells the story of the first major console war in the video game industry between the Atari 2600 and the Intellivision from Mattel. From the Digital Eclipse team comes an exploration of the rivalry, including Mattel's quixotic decision to make games for the competing Atari 2600. Highlights include a selection of M Network games, including some fan favorites; a mix of Atari and M Network sports games, as well as some rare prototypes of the Atari 2600 and 5200. New interviews include former Intellivision game director Don Daglow, M Network programmer Jane Terjung, David Crane and Activision's Garry Kitchen, homebrew programmer Dennis Debro, and historians Leonard Herman and Mike Mika.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition will be available in physical Standard edition on Nintendo Switch and Playstation 5, as well as in physical Deluxe edition on Nintendo Switch on October 25, 2024.
