Apple and Epic square off again as Fortnite faces consequences

The fact that Apple and Epic Games are arguing is not news and the two are far from reaching an agreement. Now the dispute is entering the next round. The tech company Apple and the game developer Epic Games can almost be described as archenemies. The two have been arguing for four years and there has been a hail of lawsuits. The battle royale shooter Fortnite is now also available as a mobile game, but it is only available in the Google Play Store and not in the App Store. We have summarized the dispute for you and will tell you about the latest developments. You can play Fortnite on Android devices. But is the battle royale shooter even worth it on your smartphone? We did the test for you in our video: Tried Fortnite for Android Apple vs. Epic Games: a long-standing dispute The dispute between Apple and Epic Games started in 2020. Trigger: Epic Games wanted to avoid the commission that has to be paid to Apple for in-app purchases. The tech giant didn't like that at all and blocked the developer account of the game developer and its subsidiaries. Since then, it has been raining lawsuits and counterclaims. After an agreement, Apple allowed Epic Games to have a developer account again and things seemed to have smoothed over to some extent. It was foreseeable that Fortnite would be playable on iOS devices again, at least in the EU, thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The Digital Markets Act states that Apple must make its iOS platform available for alternatives to App Store offerings. According to Epic Games, Apple did not implement the DMA sufficiently, which is why Apple reacted. Next round in the four-year dispute In March 2024, Epic Games will go public with a new accusation against Apple. This time the accusation is that Apple allegedly blocked a new developer account from Epic Games because it was supposed to develop a new app store in iOS. Epic Games announced that it would also be making its Epic Games Store ready for mobile gaming and that it would not only be usable on PCs in the future. This would mean serious competition for the Google Play Store and App Store, which currently dominate the mobile gaming market and only compete with each other. Whether and how Apple and Epic Games can and want to come to an agreement remains to be seen. However, we are currently a long way from an agreement.
