In January 2026, Animal Crossing: New Horizons received a mountain of new features, content and improvements with the 3.0 update. The free update came earlier than expected. Here you can find out what to expect, how to unlock the features and when exactly the update will be available.
When did the update appear?
The free basic update was released on January 14, 2026 surprisingly earlier than expected. The additional content and technical improvements for the Nintendo Switch 2 came a little later, on January 15, 2026 – at slightly different times depending on the time zone.

A hotel for the island: Käpten takes off
The heart of the update is undoubtedly the new resort hotel, which will be built directly on your jetty – exactly where Käpten previously offered his boat tours.
This time he stays on the island and takes over the hotel business together with his family. Your task? You design individual guest rooms according to specific themes or visitors’ specifications – as in the Happy Home Paradise extension.
For each room you design you will receive Hotel ticketsa new in-game currency. These can be found in Hotel souvenir shop exchange for exclusive items – including hotel furniture, outfits and even retro Nintendo devices.
Style advice included: designing guest outfits
What would an island vacation be without the right outfit? You can outfit two mannequins with your favorite looks right in the hotel. Guests can use it – this also applies to friends who visit your island. So you can celebrate a common island motto even in your partner’s look.
DIY orders for Tom Nook and crafting mechanics
Of course, Tom Nook is also getting involved again: he offers regularly changing items at a new kiosk right on the jetty DIY tasks to. You collect materials, make special island products and deliver them – you will receive additional hotel tickets as a reward.
By the way: With the update it is finally possible Craft DIYs in large quantities and pull the materials directly from your warehouse. So you no longer have to overload your inventory to craft a few items. Here the materials are first pulled from your inventory and then from your storage. Slumber Islands: Build your dream island (without limits)
Another highlight: the so-called Slumber Islands. These dream islands function completely independently of your main island and are, so to speak, the creative ones Sandbox modewhich many have been waiting for.
You can:
- freely terraform the terrain,
- determine the time of day and the weather,
- Place bridges and ramps immediately,
- Use furniture from your catalog as you wish,
- and even choose between three island sizes.
The best thing about it: You can use your Slumber Island with up to 12 players (on Switch 2) or 8 players (on Switch 1) create together – with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Terraforming becomes easier
With the update and the Slumber Islands, terraforming will also be made a little more fluid. If you build new cliffs, the controls can throw a wrench in your plans. Suddenly you pulled up the earth somewhere else than planned. With the 3.0 update, you can hold down the L button to move without changing the direction you are facing.
Reset service from Resetti: cleaning up made easy
Who doesn’t know it? You want to redesign it, but there are still flowers, items and old decorations everywhere. From now on you can Order Resettito clean up entire areas of the island – even the entire island if desired. And don’t worry: nothing will be lost. Everything will be placed directly into storage upon request.
More space for everything: storage expansion to 9,000 items
For all collectors among you: The maximum storage volume increases from 5,000 with the update 9,000 seats.
