In any competitive game, it's not uncommon to trust the tier lists of characters to know which ones will give you the best chance of winning. On Smash Bros Ultimate, however, the fighters wouldn't be that unbalanced. In any case, this is what the creator of the game himself says.

The dictate of the tier-list

Even if the player's talent is necessarily the most central element to take into account in a competitive match, it is ultimately not that rare to fall back on other variables when looking to improve. Whether you are a fan of Valorant, League of Legends, Street Fighter or Super Smash Bros Ultimate, you must have already looked for a tier list of characters or weapons one day or another. It must be said that by losing games over and over again, we often try to find out if the problem is not coming from somewhere other than ourselves.

Balancing has always been a particularly thorny subject in video games. While this is obviously the case in competitive multiplayer games for obvious reasons, tier lists have finally managed to find a place even in single-player games. For example, we can find this kind of list on games like Elden Ring or Hades. In this type of case, the goal is often simply to find a weapon or a character with which we will be able to go further than usual, without necessarily wanting to compare ourselves to others.

Smash Bros Ultimate is more balanced than you think

As you will have understood, tier lists are commonplace in video games to know the strongest characters or equipment in a particular game. However, who says overpowered character also necessarily says character who is weaker than the others. Result: in many competitive games, certain characters are almost never played for fear of shooting themselves in the foot. In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, for example, Little Mac is known for having been at the bottom of all tier lists for a while despite extremely nervous and fun gameplay to play.. However, the characters in Nintendo's competitive game wouldn't be that unbalanced.

A few days ago, the creator of Super Smash Bros Ultimate (Masahiro Sakurai) made a video to talk about balancing his competitive game. After speaking generally about the balance between the fun provided by a character and its effectiveness in competition as well as the balance between the diversity of approaches and overall balancing, Masahiro Sakurai revealed a very interesting statistic about his game. According to him and the data collected from all online matches played around the world on Super Smash Bros Ultimate, the weakest character would have a victory rate of 47.18% compared to 51.53% for the strongest.. A very tight range which reveals that the characters in the game are actually very well balanced. For comparison, in League of Legends, the best character had a victory rate of 53.73% (Brand in midlane) at the last patch, compared to 43.86% for the weakest (K'Sante in toplane).

In Smash Bros Ultimate, all characters have the same chance of winning (yes, even Little Mac)... and we know it from a reliable source!

According to Masahiro Sakurai, the tier lists on Smash Bros are ultimately the direct result of multiple echo chambers produced on the internet. In other words, players are constantly praising the merits of this or that character and burying others, and the whole thing would have the effect of convincing everyone that these impressions are real. If he didn't want to give us the names of the characters with the best and worst victory rates, the creator of Smash Bros still tried to break a hell of a myth surrounding his game. If you've always stopped yourself to play Little Mac because of the tier lists, so all you have to do is train with this character to prove your opponents wrong.
