AI can help, but it cannot replace talent

Video game company Keywords Studios has attempted to create a 2D game using only generative AI. They came to a clear conclusion.

Can AI soon develop entire games? There is already enough for assets.

Since the rapid rise of ChatGPT, the topic of artificial intelligence has arrived in people's minds. The topic is always controversially discussed, especially in the gaming industry.

According to that current GDC report 80 percent of all developers surveyed said that AI tools will have “negative impacts” and that they are worried. The Irish gaming service provider Keyword Studios tried to develop a game exclusively using such tools and came to a clear result.

Developers do big “AI test”

The Irish service provider Keyword Studios consists of numerous developers and service providers who help studios with tasks such as porting or localizing their games. In the Financial report for the year 2023 the company describes an interesting experiment.

An attempt was made to develop a 2D game using generative AI. Over a period of six months, the team tested over 400 tools as part of “Project Ava”. While the artificial intelligence proved to be extremely helpful in many areas, it was never able to completely complete the game. In total, the resources of seven different studios had to be pooled together.

Keyword Studios' verdict is as follows: “One of the key findings was that although generative AI simplifies or accelerates processes, the best results and quality can only be achieved by experts in their field, using AI as a new, powerful tool in their creative Integrate the process.”

The experienced service provider also explains that their findings by no means rule out the possibility that AI will be able to program games completely independently in the future. However, in their opinion, this is not the case at the moment.

The use of such tools in video games has increased significantly in recent years. A prominent example of this are the developers of the shooter hit “The Finals”, who were harshly criticized for using artificially generated voices.
