It is a painful topic: With The Winds of Winter, George RR Martin is now 13 years late. Fans can't be too optimistic that the penultimate novel in the Song of Ice and Fire saga will appear in the foreseeable future.

But the books on which the TV series Game of Thrones is based are not the only series that Martin has not yet completed. The Tales of Dunk and Egg (in German The Hedge Knight of Westeros) consist of three novels that currently end in a pretty nasty cliffhanger.

Dunk & Egg also has no real ending yet

The last book was published in 2010 and since then things have been pretty quiet around Dunk & Egg. At least when it comes to the novels: Because a new TV series in the Game of Thrones universe will start in 2025which follows the story of the hedge knight Duncan the Great and his squire Aegon.

This is exactly what George RR Martin is now addressing in a new post his personal blog. Among other things, Martin discusses the casting of the two main actors (Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell) and offers fans further news about the cast.

At the same time, Martin emphasizes that The Hedge Knight noticeably shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon will be canceled, which is due to the short story format of the template. Season 1 of the new series will only have six episodes instead of the usual eight to ten.

Martin also reveals, that he is definitely not finished with the adventures of Dunk and Egg: As soon as he finishes The Winds of Winter (whenever that may be), the 75-year-old author plans to continue the story of the Hedge Knight and his squire.

By the way: Meanwhile, Season 2 of House of the Dragon continues on June 16, 2024. You can find the latest trailer for the upcoming episodes as follows.

George RR Martin is optimistic (once again).

Martin even narrows down to some extent when he would like to devote himself to this: If the TV series based on the book The Hedge Knight is successful, the two sequels The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight could also be adapted. And by then, Martin not only wants to have told The Winds of Winter, but also new stories about Dunk & Egg.

Of course, you should enjoy this timing with a healthy pinch of skepticism. George RR Martin has often been wrong about his self-imposed deadlines in the past. But one thing that can definitely be credited to the author is that he continues to be not only ambitious, but also optimistic.
