After years of waiting, “Assassin's Creed Shadows” is heading to Japan in November. Art director Thierry Dansereau explains why the timing of the new game is perfect.
Fans of the “Assassin's Creed” series have long wanted a setting in Japan. After years of speculation and demands, Ubisoft is releasing “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” soon a game set in this setting.
But why did it take so long to implement the concept? Art director Thierry Dansereau sees the waiting time as a clear advantage.
Focus on authenticity and gaming tradition
In an interview with Play magazine, Dansereau emphasized that the long development time of “Assassin's Creed Shadows” enabled the developers to focus intensively on the “new-gen features”.
“I think the timing is great because it really allowed us to develop the new-gen features that I felt were desperately needed for such a setting to take full advantage of it,” he explained.
Dansereau emphasized that the development of Assassin's Creed Shadows is based heavily on the core principles of the series. Despite the long wait and many fans' hopes of being able to experience the Japanese setting sooner, he sees the game as a logical step in the further development of the brand.
“It was part of our natural evolution to create this setting,” emphasized Dansereau, referring to the “rich history of game development” of “Assassin's Creed.” The title was developed “taking into account the pillars of Assassin's Creed.”

According to Dansereau, the art team for “Shadows” also placed particular emphasis on realism and immersion. According to the Play report, they focused primarily on a type of photorealism and a high level of detail. Such strategies are crucial to draw players into the historical atmosphere and not disrupt the gaming experience.
Scope and size of Shadows
Another detail that Dansereau revealed in the interview is the size of the game. According to him, “Assassin's Creed Shadows” will be about as big as “Origins”, which means that it will be smaller than “Valhalla” but bigger than “Mirage”. However, We are not hearing about this for the first time.
The game focuses on the Honshu region, which is of great importance in Japanese history, especially in relation to the warlord Oda Nobunaga.
