Actual measurement of how many watts of power is needed for Core i9-14900K+RTX 4090 to be fully turned on–Quick Technology–Technology changes the future

In mid-October, Intel released the 14th generation Core processor as scheduled. Although the Raptor Lake architecture lacks some new ideas, it has optimized the soldering process of the top cover and the Intel7 process technology, which still has a significant improvement in performance.

In particular, it is better in terms of temperature resistance and pressure resistance, and the Turbo frequency is also higher. Coupled with a high-performance RTX40 series graphics card, it is a relatively ideal installation solution recently.

When actually installing the computer, many people are confused about the power selection of the power supply. If they buy it too low, they may bring hidden dangers to the stable operation of the system, and if they buy it too high, they will waste a small amount of money.

Although many graphics cards will give power recommendations for the power supply, the actual power consumption performance still needs to be judged by testing. Today we will use the 14th generation Core i9 14900K processor + GeForceRTX 4090 graphics card to form a “dream” platform with full power. See See exactly how many watts of power are needed to meet your needs.

As usual, let’s release this test platform first.

As a high-end model of the 14th generation processor, the Core i9 14900K has 24 cores and 32 threads, 36MB of large L3 cache, and a turbo frequency of up to 6GHz, but the basic TDP is also as high as 125W and up to 253W.

As a contemporary “card king”, GeForce RTX 4090 has a TGP of up to 600W, and the recommended power supply is no less than 850W.

Considering power redundancy, we choose Huntkey MVP P1200 platinum full module power supply.Supports ATX3.0 specification and has a rated power of 1200W.It has passed 80PLUS platinum certification and supports 2-channel 600W 12VHPWR graphics card power output.

The intelligent start-stop design will only start the fan when the load is higher than 200W and reaches the threshold temperature to achieve a balance between performance and silence. After shutting down, the power supply fan will run for 60 seconds to delay the aging loss caused by high temperature waste heat.

The higher TDP of the Core i9 14900K leads to a considerable amount of heat generated when running at full speed. Therefore, high-load testing requires a high-performance 360mm water-cooling radiator. We chose Huntkey’s latest MVP Poseidon V360. Its biggest feature is that it uses Instead of a square water-cooling head, the internal silent water pump uses high-life ceramic bearings, and the bottom is equipped with a high-density copper bottom with shovel teeth, which effectively increases the heat absorption area and improves heat exchange efficiency.

There is also a 2.4-inch IPS LCD display embedded on the front of the cold head, which can check the temperature of the CPU at any time, and can also display customized content such as pictures, GIFs, videos, etc. It also supports gravity sensing to ensure the correct orientation of the screen.

The cold radiator uses 12 water channels and S-shaped fins to provide a higher heat dissipation area. The EPDM rubber braided sleeve has good toughness and can adjust a certain angle on the cold head. The cooling fan equipped with the cold radiator adopts long-life hydraulic bearings, supports the PWM speed adjustment of the motherboard, and also supports the current trend of RGB lighting effects, and supports the RGB lighting effect control of major domestic brand motherboards.

The chassis adopts the Huntkey 980 Tornado Panoramic Edition, which looks very “solid” in appearance. The left and right layered dual-cavity structure effectively releases the internal space. It has 10 fan positions inside and supports a 360mm water-cooled radiator, which has excellent heat dissipation performance.

The cabinet adopts SGCC steel spraying process and is available in black and white. The transparent ultra-white tempered glass on the left side and the front transparent glass are seamlessly connected, creating a visual effect of “no A-pillars”. It can be called a real “sea view room”. The RGB accessories inside the rear will instantly liven up the atmosphere.

For power testing, we use Unilite power tester, which can display the power of the current test equipment in real time, which is simple, crude and intuitive. After the power meter is turned on, the maximum idle power recorded by the power meter is less than 140W. This “top configuration” also has a “quiet” side.

AAA game masterpieces can mobilize the “motivation” of machine accessories. The game we tested is “A Plague Tale: Requiem”, which “eats” CPU resources. Of course, turning on ray tracing also puts a lot of pressure on the graphics card. In the game, we turned on ray tracing, set the image quality to extremely high, and the refresh rate was 120Hz. When running, the power meter showed that the maximum power of the whole machine was 608W, which can be said to be relatively “moderate”.

Next, open AIDA64 and run the Stress FPU roaster in the system stability test. That is to say, running what everyone calls “single baking”, the power meter records that the maximum power of the whole machine is 510W.

Turn off AIDA64 and open the graphics card stress testing software FurMark, also known as “Donut”.Set to 1920×1080 resolution, the graphics card runs at full load after operation, and the power meter records that the maximum power of the whole machine is 630W.

At this time, we run AIDA64’s Stress FPU roaster again. It can be said that the CPU and graphics card are all in a state of full firepower. If you also want to perform a “dual repair” test of CPU + graphics card, remember to run FurMark first. If you run AIDA64 first, the CPU will be fully loaded, and even the Core i9 14900K will become unresponsive to mouse operations.

At this time, the power meter recorded that the maximum power of the whole machine reached 960W, which has far exceeded the 850W recommended by the RTX 4090 graphics card!

It can be seen from the test that the gap between the lowest and highest power consumption of a configuration is very large. For example, the lowest power consumption of the Core i9 14900K+RTX4090 configuration is only more than 100W, while the full firepower can be as high as nearly 1000W. The power supply recommended by the graphics card manufacturer is actually 850W which fully meets the needs in game mode.

But if it is running at full load, even a 1000W power supply will tremble. Therefore, when purchasing a power supply, you must leave at least 10% power redundancy based on the sum of the maximum TDP of the CPU and the TGB of the graphics card.
