Culture news “It wasn’t honest” This director settles scores with Paramount after the release of his series
While it is one of the most successful western series at the moment, its main actor ended up leaving the production after the fifth season. On the occasion of this departure, the American star returned to the reasons for this decision which was not made in good conditions.
Yellowstone, a phenomenon series
Although we haven't heard too much about it at home, Yellowstone is nevertheless a real success across the Atlantic. Behind this name hides a series with a modern western feel that makes us follow the Dutton family who own the largest ranch in the United States near Yellowstone National Park. In a contemporary setting and in the heart of Montana, we discover the patriarch John, a man with sometimes expeditious methods played by Kevin Costner, who masterfully leads his family to face the politicians and real estate developers who threaten his land. .
A series with typically American themes, which explains its popularity in the country of Uncle Sam. And then, it must be said that the show created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson can especially count on the presence of Kevin Costner in the title role, which inevitably attracts. Unfortunately, after five seasons, the 69-year-old actor ended up slamming the door with losses and crashes in May 2023 after 47 episodes. His departure marked a halt for the series, which created real complications for the rest of the production. But on the occasion of the Cannes Film Festival where he presented his film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Kevin Costner returned to the reasons for his departure.
A conflict with production
During an interview given to the American media Deadline, Kevin Costner returned to the scheduling problems he had with Yellowstone, but also with production herself to whom she blames many things. During the interview, he explains his version of the facts:
Last year, I didn't feel good about (Yellowstone), given the way they talked about it. It wasn't honest. So now I'm going to set the record straight a little. I signed a contract for seasons five, six and seven. In February, after two or three months of negotiations, they concluded another contract. They wanted to do this deal again, and instead of seasons six and seven, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we'd do six. They couldn't make them happen. Horizon was located in the middle, but Yellowstone was in first place. I brought Horizon into those moments. They kept moving these moments.
So, it would be questions of scheduling conflicts with his film Horizon and a bad understanding with the production of Yellowstone which would have caused the departure of Kevin Costner. But given the standing ovation the film received at the Cannes Film Festival, it seems like it was worth it.
