The weeks go by and look the same, at least as far as layoffs are concerned. A real dark start to the year for some employees who fear for their work, some must deal with the fear of being fired after the fruits of their labor are released.

A busy month of March

The month of March was definitely worth a look for video game fans. It was its third week which was particularly notable with no less than four expected releases of titles. Rise of the Ronin, Dragon's Dogma 2 and Princess Peach: Showtime were generally popular. Less strikingly, the remake of Alone in the Dark was talked about. If it may disappoint in comparison to Resident Evil 4 named among the games of the year 2023, it nonetheless remains the product of passionate developers and artists. As evidenced by the post, on March 20, from one of the QA Analysts Helena Hansen:

I released my first game today!

She is then congratulated from all sides, some even wondering about the game in question. An enthusiasm which, unfortunately, is short-lived.

THQ Nordic and Embracer

Since the start of the year, video games have been going through an unprecedented crisis. Barely five months have passed and many companies, behind triple A or not, are laying off workers. Sony, Microsoft, Take-Two…As if they all had to go through this. A sort of sword of Damocles that lurks around the teams in charge of video games. This fell on Helena Hansen. She declares it on the social network X.

I'M GETTING FIRED
I'll do a better post with my links and all that once the feelings have died down, but ugh. My heart breaks for me and my coworkers right now

By mentioning the initial post where she suggested her pride in having released her first title, she shares her more than palpable disappointment. Alone in the Dark is developed by Pieces Interactive, part of publisher THQ Nordic. The latter belongs to Embracer Group. The latter is probably one of the video game publishers the most hated players since in nine months, it canceled 42 projects and eliminated 1,383 jobs.
